About Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy (BCLA)
At Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy, students are actively engaged in learning, guided by passionate teachers in a supportive classroom environment. BCLA is a tuition-free public charter school in Huntersville, North Carolina that opened in 2023 to offer families a new, high-quality educational option. As part of the Bonnie Cone Schools family, BCLA extends a time-tested classical education model through middle and high school, sharing the same rigorous curriculum and core values as our Bonnie Cone Classical Academy Pre-K–6 sister school. We place a special emphasis on leadership development and real-world readiness, ensuring that as students grow, they assume increasing responsibility and become confident, well-rounded individuals. Our mission is to cultivate both intellectual and personal character, preparing students to excel in college and future careers while emerging as positive leaders in their communities.
Our Classical Education Philosophy
Classical education is the foundation of everything we do at BCLA. This proven approach focuses on three stages of learning, known as the trivium – grammar, logic, and rhetoric – which build knowledgeable, thoughtful, and articulate students. In practice, this means our students first gain a strong base of facts and fundamentals, then learn to reason critically about that knowledge, and finally learn to express and apply their ideas effectively. By exposing students to rich literature, history, science, and the arts, the classical model provides the broad background knowledge and learning skills needed to tackle any subject with confidence.
- Grammar Stage: In the early years, students build a solid foundation by absorbing facts and mastering basic skills in all subjects. They learn through observation and memorization—mastering phonics, spelling rules, basic math facts, key narratives from history and literature, and essential concepts in science. This strong knowledge base sets the stage for deeper learning.
- Logic Stage: As students progress to middle school, they begin to ask “why?” and analyze information rather than simply accepting it. The logic stage teaches them to think independently and reason clearly about what they have learned. They practice forming sound arguments, engage with the scientific method, explore literature analytically, and tackle more abstract math like algebra and geometry.
- Rhetoric Stage: In high school, students enter the rhetoric stage, where they learn to communicate their knowledge and ideas persuasively. They refine their writing and speaking skills through crafting arguments, delivering presentations, and participating in respectful debates. This final stage empowers students not only to think for themselves but also to inspire and lead others with clarity and conviction.
A Rigorous & Inspiring Curriculum
Our curriculum is carefully designed to nurture each student’s growth and foster a genuine love of learning. Through unique methods and proven programs, we encourage exploration, discovery, and creativity in every classroom—setting students up for a bright future of academic achievement and lifelong learning. Our knowledge-rich curriculum aligns with national standards and meets or exceeds state accountability guidelines, providing a challenging education that goes beyond basic requirements by emphasizing deep understanding and mastery of content.
- Mathematics Excellence: We implement the acclaimed Eureka Math program to teach mathematics. This curriculum focuses on conceptual understanding and math fluency, accommodating diverse learning styles to ensure every student truly grasps the “why” behind mathematical concepts. Rather than just memorizing formulas, students develop strong problem-solving skills and build the confidence needed for advanced coursework and real-life applications.
- Rich Language Arts: In language arts, we use the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum in the elementary grades and a sequential Core Knowledge approach in middle school. This comprehensive program develops strong skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while steadily building vocabulary and a broad background in literature, history, and science. Through engaging with classic texts and historical narratives, students gain both technical proficiency and cultural literacy, emerging as articulate, informed communicators. Foundational Latin instruction further enhances their understanding of language structure and grammar.
- Knowledge Across Disciplines: We believe in a content-rich education. BCLA follows a rigorous, grade-by-grade Core Knowledge sequence that aligns seamlessly with our classical philosophy. Key ideas in history, science, literature, and the arts are introduced early and reinforced over time, ensuring that learning builds progressively and comprehensively. This intentional layering of content helps students connect ideas across disciplines, solidifying their understanding and sparking continual intellectual curiosity.
Preparing Students for Leadership, College & Career
At Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy, education is about forming leaders. We intentionally cultivate the skills and character traits necessary for success in college, careers, and beyond. Our classical model equips students with the ability to think critically, reason effectively, and communicate persuasively—essential skills in any field. Classroom discussions and projects challenge students to analyze information and articulate their ideas, laying the groundwork for confident leadership and innovative problem-solving.
Leadership development is integrated into every aspect of school life. As students progress through the grades, they are encouraged to take on increasing responsibilities—whether by leading group projects, mentoring younger peers, or spearheading community service initiatives. This hands-on experience with leadership, combined with academic rigor, ensures that our students emerge as capable, independent thinkers ready to make a positive impact.
In addition, we believe that character education is inseparable from academic success. BCLA instills core R.A.I.S.E. values—Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Service, and Excellence—into the fabric of daily school life. These virtues are reinforced through classroom activities and school culture, helping students grow into morally upright citizens who care for themselves, others, and the wider world.
Our focus on college and career readiness means that every element of our education is designed to prepare students for the next steps in life. BCLA provides ample opportunities for students to explore their talents—whether in academics, the arts, athletics, or community service—ensuring that by graduation they are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the independence, work ethic, and communication skills necessary for success in higher education and the professional world.
