Knowledge-based schooling puts the emphasis of early education on teaching and learning an enabling core of broadly shared knowledge—enabling because it builds strong foundations for later learning and opens doors to effective participation and mutual understanding in the wider society.
Bonnie Cone Classical Academy’s Pre-K-6 program offers a solid foundation for our classical curriculum. We focus on teaching students how to learn and think, not what to learn and think.
Following the ideas of the classical education model, our instruction focuses on the first two stages of learning: grammar and logic. Grammar, the typical stage for grades Pre-K-5, is the stage in which students learn foundational knowledge that will serve as the building blocks for later learning. Logic, typically presented in grade 6, focuses more on developing the student’s ability to analyze and interpret information. We combine our classical education model we utilize the Core Knowledge Sequence and Curriculum which provides our scholars with a well-integrated curriculum. According to Core Knowledge,
Our curriculum is sequenced and specific grade-by-grade. These building blocks of information provide the prior knowledge that is required to advance in academic content. Background knowledge is the primary driver of language comprehension, whether written or spoken.
- The belief that knowledge, for its own sake, is valuable. Classical education places emphasis on educating lifelong learners who continue with a sense of curiosity and exploration even after their academic career is over. Bonnie Cone Classical Academy adopts this philosophy wholeheartedly.
- Education upholding classical standards. The material taught through a classical education is valuable because it adheres to specific standards that are important to civilization.
- Moral virtue. With our R.A.I.S.E Virtues, BCCA promotes moral strength and virtuous living.
- Citizenship. At BCCA, we feel a strong sense of national pride and a responsibility to be contributing members of American society. Our students develop an appreciation for their country and their local communities. We give students opportunities to put this into practice, using our R.A.I.S.E. Virtues as a guide.
While the principles of classical education date back as far as 2500 years, they are universal ideas that—if applied correctly—can prepare students for the modern world.
Bonnie Cone Classical Academy’s Pre-K-6 campus provides an ideal setting for developing students. We nurture each student’s social and emotional development through R.A.I.S.E virtues and classical learning, preparing them for success in their academic career and beyond.
